What at home hair color brand would you say works the best?

I am looking to save a little money and dye my hair at home for the first time. I am a brunette with some grown out highlights looking to go a darker brunette and even everything out. I am looking for something "fool proof" as I have never done it myself.

Since you've never done your hair at home, I would recommend picking a box that is lighter than the actual color you want (it usually comes out darker than you think it will). Also, It's easier to re-dye and go darker than it is to go back lighter. Secondly, I would use a semi-permanent color in case you hate how it turns out. No box color is "fool proof", but following the directions meticulously is your best bet.
