How can I work from home in the medical transcription field?

I am just completing my medical transcription course and was wondering how it works from home. I find the field of Pathology the most interesting and would love to work in thaf field, working from home. What I'm wondering is how it works, for instance, do I tap into a website to get the transcriptions? Thanks for any help.

I worked in the medical field (physician office and hospitals) for years and years. Most of the doctor's I worked with didn't use a service or website to hire for transcription. It was usually someone who came into the office with a flyer about their service and their prices. Once hired, the person would come in at the end of the day and pick up the tapes for that day and would usually return them within 3 days. Most hospitals don't hire independent transcription contractors. They hire employees who work from the hospital. However, with telecommuting now becoming so popular, I would think a few calls to the HR dept. of several hospitals might just snag you a contract or two. You might also make a few calls to some labs in your area---you mentioned path is fascinating to you. I think if you market yourself in the right way and you have competitive pricing you'd have a really good chance of convincing some of the smaller places to give you a chance even if that hasn't been the norm for them in the past. Everyone is looking to save on costs right now!

First I hope you are enrolled in a medical transcription course that actually has a partnership with medical transcription companies who actually hire their graduates. Without that it is very difficult to get that first job. Most companies will require 2-5 years experience.

As an acute care medical transcriptionist (one who does all types of medical transcription, generally referred to as the "basic four," meaning history and physicals, consultations, operation reports and discharge summaries), I can attest to the fact that most large hospitals and clinics outsource their transcription department to medical transcription services.

I have done medical transcription for many years working from home. It works like this: You receive voice files over a secure server. You transcribe those reports while maintaining HIPPA rules on confidentiality. The transcribed reports are returned to the client via the secure server. The records are then stored at the hospital/clinic by the method of their choice.

The first thing I would do, since you are already enrolled in a course, is contact someone at your school and ask if they have partnerships with companies who hire their graduates. If they don't then I would get a list of medical transcription companies (you can get this from the internet) and start phoning them. Your resume would not likely get any attention as the companies are looking for MTs with experience. If you can get someone to allow you to take their test and you pass they will likely hire you.

There are many work at home scams out there with the economy in the tank. I caution everyone who is contemplating a medical transcription course to make very sure that the school they are considering actually has a partnership with companies who hire their grads. Many say that they are "affiliated." This doesn't mean a thing unless they can place you in a job.

You can also try to get contracts for yourself but for the most part that would be very expensive as most would want you to provide secure servers to transfer the records. Additionally, you would likely face very strong competition for the accounts and without experience it is doubtful you would get such accounts.

You can work from home doing medical transcription and it is a legitimate work at home career and can be very lucrative.

I hope this has been helpful and best of luck to you in finding that first job.

I've done transcription from home for several years and it works great. The company I work for has you download their HIPAA compliant software and your work is assigned from there.

It's easy because you let them know about how much audio you want per day and they'll download it. Then you're able to work on your own time as long as you get all the files back within 24 hours.

There are some companies that require you to work on a shift also. I got the name of my company from the Work From Home Ebook (www.eflippingfordummies.com). It's $10 and it gives you a list of a bunch of companies that hire and those that have benefits. All of the companies are work from home. It also gives details on which companies hire people just out of courses as many of the better places require 2 or 3 years experience.

It's helped me a TON and I got my 2 contracts from there so I'm busy all the time. I also found the contract that I have that provides my medical insurance from there.

Anyhow, good luck.

You can solicit for your own clients or go to work for an MT Service. If you solicit for your own clients there are many ways to set up the receiving of the dictation from handhelds that the doctor dictates into and then uploads to a server where you download to transcribe and then upload the finished reports back to the server or having a call-in system called a TASP (check out bytescribe.com for more info on this). If you work for an MT service most have you log into their FTP server using various software and download your dictation, transcribe it, and upload it back to their server. There are many programs out there that MT services uses. Bytescribe is one such program.

Your school should have taught you all about this. There is a good book available called The Independent Medical Transcriptionist (can find on Amazon.com) that talks about how to set up your own business. Also, Meditec.com sells a book called the Home Biz book that is an excellent resource and they sell a book called Transitioning into MT, which is very good. Also, they have an internship program that you can enter that helps you transition into MT. Good luck to you.

There's an online workflow demo on the website below that shows you how the process works. As a new graduate you may have to work in an office (in pathology, probably the hospital lab) to get the experience you'll need to get a home based position. Jobs on the website also.

Hi,

One avenue is to start a website or blog pertaining to what you know about. In this case its the field of pathology. Now, this doesn't have to be about pathology. Write about whatever else you love and enjoy. There are websites out there where you can form a blog and earn revenue from adsense, affiliate marketing, and other methods. How you earn money is you provide valuable information and the advertisers compensate you for your content when people visit your blog or website. Blogs are free to my knowledge and I have one blog of mine that I would recommend. For further information I can be reached at adamgt07@yahoo.com. Please allow 24 hours for a response.

Thank you,

-Adam G.T.

The major bulk of medical transcription work in the U.S. has been greatly curtailed by state privacy laws as it pertains to medical records and patient confidentiality. The vast majority of medical records are kept in recordkeeping departments within medical centers and any transcription work is done "in-house," not "outsourced." So, beware of any offers which promote online in home medical transcription work--there are scammers out there.

Good luck!

there are many companies that hire people to work from home, go to webites like MTstars or google medical transcription jobs from home to find other sites that post those jobs. I recently finished the course and wish I never took it. It is hard to get your foot in the door if you do not have at least 2-3 years experience.
