How to check a home for underframing?

I'm interested in buying a house in Massachusetts and have learned that underframing ("the presence of undersized and/or over-spaced beams in a home's framework") is a common problem, is there a way I can check for underframing myself in a home I'm interested in before paying the hundreds of dollars for an inspection?

If a home does have underframing, is this even something that can be fixed, and if so how much? Thanks!

never heard of this but codes change over time so old codes are usually grandfathered into new ones and I doubt if anyone will lend money on something that is not safe but you can check with your local building codes department they'll be able to tell you the code
