What home remedies can I use for my dogs skin?

My dog had a bad flea problem. We have FINALLY gotten rid of the stupid things but my dog still scratches and his skin is very red. He even has a few spots that are bleeding. He has lost some hair but the Vet told us that it will grow back. Are there any home remedies that I can use to soothe this poor guys itching?

Your dog is suffering from flea bite allergies.. the fleas are gone, but the bites caused an allergic reaction.. your dog itches and scratches.. the skin is irritated, so it gets even more itchy.. its a vicious cycle.

Your best bet is to ask the vet about a cortizone shot to releive the itching and irritation.

Was your dog on antibiotics for the severe skin issue? The fleas did need to be dealt with, but it sounds like your dog needed some antibiotics for the secondary skin infection.

If your dog was never on any, you should ask your vet to prescribe some.

If your dog was on some but has finished them, yet the itchy, red, bleeding skin persists, the antibiotics should be continued for a longer time, or perhaps a different antibiotic is necessary.

I'm sure the fur will grow back over time, and antibiotic shampoos may also help.

edit: I wish people would stop recommending that "seefido" website. It is very weird and has very strange advice. I also would not recommend any sort of wet preparation like bag balm or vaseline. When you apply wet preparations like that it traps bacteria and can actually spread skin infections.

I'm surprised the Vet didn't suggest something. You have to be careful because if he has bleeding and redness he could get an infections easily. I would ask the vet. You just have to be careful with home remedies. You could very easily hurt your dog and if it doesn't clear up soon it might be considered abuse by some of your neighbors even though you have good intentions.

Also oatmeal shampoo the vet should of given ya to make her feel better while healing. Try to keep her inside out of the weather too. Now yeast infection medication will help her heal faster and it will not hurt her in any way even if licked. Timely is important for her not to see ya put it on. Helps keeps her from licking it off. Rub it in good. It has a anti-fungus medication in it and even if a tiny bit stays on it will help heal faster

Okay bag balm works well. It stops itching and deters scratching.

Skin so soft works as well. Vaseline may work if in small areas. Stay away from home cooked food. and try to keep the dog away from heater vents. I know it soundsdumb but the heat can dry out their skin as well.

well I use bag-balm, the stuff you put on cows utters so they dont chap (dad was a farmer) and its like a healing lotion for animals, and it works great!I have even trid it before on my rough skin, and it cleared it, so it works! its not just for cows

Corn starch. My dog has skin allergies and this is a life saver for him. It stops the itching for a while. Make a paste of it and rub it on. Oatmeal will also help with itching and red inflamed skin.

Garlic - I have heard this is a good solution in dogs - as it makes, the fleas jump off dogs and cats.
