I am assuming you have other furniture in your large living room. If so is the furniture fit to scale?
Another words is your sofa large and bulky? It should be so your big screen TV does not look like a sore thumb. We have a large screen TV also and it made the rest of the room look kind of bare so we added a Jule box to balance things out.You said you may add a new dog to the mix. May I suggest you buy a kennel for the dog (black wire instead of silver) Then place the kennel right next to the patio door so when the dog enters the room it will learn to stay there a few moments and the outside debris will end up in the kennel instead of all over the house. Pad it with a pet bed or washable blanket. Our dogs love their kennel and they can see outside. From time to time I decorate the outside of their little home with lacy curtins. They can still see thru them plus the air can still flow freely. Have great fun decorating.
Best of luck.
IT IS QUITE EASY TO TURN YOUR HOUSE INTO A HOME, JUST TAKE SOME TIME AND PUT LOVE INTO YOUR PURCHASES. LOOK A DIFFERENT MAGAZINES, SUCH AS MARTHA STEWARD, BETTER HOMES AND GARDEN. I LIKE SCENTED CANDLES, PRETTY CURTAINS, COMFY THROW PILLOWS. RELAX AND HAVE FUN MAKING YOUR HOME YOUR OWN.
I am an architect and do this every day. I think you need to add a media room. You are correct in not buying a new house and adding is a great way of getting more from the existing house. Adding a media room if you have space on your lot should be easy and not very expensive. The size t.v. you have deserves a better way of watching it and a home theater is best. This will also allow you to use the existing space efficiently and make it more functional.
Good luck.
If you feel comfortable in your home, then so will anyone else who may be living there, or visiting.
Surround yourself with what you think is comfortable. A big sectional couch, large pillows, lazy boy chairs, rugs, lamps, and other things that may not neccisarily look good, but are comfortable.
Don't worry about keeping the house squeaky clean. Part of the enjoyment of having a home is letting a few chores go and turning on a good movie. It's nice to relax, and when you do, you don't want to have to be telling yourself there is cleaning to do.
I don't reccomend letting it get filthy, but maybe just break in your house by having some people over, and just let go.
Lastly, just laugh. Have fun with your family in your great new home. Have a family dinner where you all sit and joke about anything. It is great to broadcast an atmosphere of enjoyment, relaxation, happiness, community and family by simply saying "this is our home, and we are going to enjoy it as much as possible".
Best of Luck !!
