How do small home businesses work? I want to start one?

I have decided that I want to start a home business selling a certain type of clothing that is not common in my area.

Where do I even begin?

I know I have to find a wholesale distributor, set up a website, maybe do ebay, etc.

But, do I have to register the business some place if I am just selling from home? And how do wholesale distributors work? Do I have to purchase one of everything I want in every size or do I order from them as orders come in to me?

How much money upfront has to be invested in a business like this?

Any advice from anyone running their own home business would be great! Thanks!

Go to the Small Business Administration in your area. They give classes and will give you information and brochures full of all kinds of info. You can learn a lot that way.

Wholesalers are all different so you need to contact them and find out the terms from them. Sometimes the initial order needs to be quite large but not always. You can usually order only what you want but some insist you order a full range of products. It varies quite a lot.

The amount of money you need up front depends on the distributor you want to buy from and setup costs for things you will need at home to manage the business. And yes, no matter where the business is located physically it needs to be registered for tax purposes. That is a very small cost and easy to do in most states. You'll need a form from the state for business registration and that's about it.
